Talk Series: Let Your Kids Thrive – Insights from German Parenting and Schooling (Jan 2026)
On 17 January 2026, we were very pleased to have two speakers, Ms. Alexandra Freigang-Krause, the Principal of German Swiss International School, and Ms. Erica Chan, a language specialist and a mother from Hong Kong with her three children in Germany, to give a talk at HKU SPACE. They guided us to explore the cultural, social, and institutional dimensions of parenting and education in Germany. It highlighted the structure of the German school system and the educational pathway with particular emphasis on primary and secondary schooling. The session also examined the roles and relationships of parents and school in nurturing children, highlighting the values accentuated in Germany. Attendees could gain insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by families navigating Germany’s educational landscape, with practical comparisons to other systems and its implications for international educators and parents.
