Highlights

Applied psychology is the use of theory and findings in psychology to solve practical problems in important areas of the human environment, including education, health, the workplace, and so on. This programme is designed to help participants apply cutting-edge theory to real-world situations. It is made up of different registered psychologists and other related specialists to deliver a powerful curriculum that explores a range of human behaviors, including how to motivate individuals and organizations, how to assess and improve performance and how to pursue healthy lives.

Programme Details

The course enables participants to:

  • obtain an overview of the major theories and concepts in the areas of applied psychology,
  • apply the knowledge base and principles of applied psychology to current/future professional and personal development as managers and leaders in public and/or private organizations,
  • achieve a better understanding of oneself and others.

This is a part-time course delivered via a combination of lectures, workshops, role-play practices, etc.

Curriculum

  • Application of clinical psychology - e.g. Understanding psychopathology
  • Application of counselling psychology – e.g. Counselling and coaching
  • Application of health psychology – e.g. Emotional management and psychotherapy
  • Application of industrial/organizational Psychology – e.g. Leadership and change
  • Application of personality psychology – e.g. Common personality assessments
  • Application of positive psychology - e.g. Mindfulness and character strength
  • Application of social psychology – e.g. Obedience and conformity

[Note: Topics to be included are subject to change.]

Assessment

Course participants will be required to submit 2 written assignments on specific topics, which are set by the instructors involved. Besides, there is also a minimum attendance requirement of 80%

Dr Evan Choi

Background

Dr. Evan Choi is a Registered Industrial-Organisational Psychologist under the Division of Industrial-Organisational Psychology (DIOP) of the Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS). He has held a range of academic, consulting, and in-house corporate roles, and works with leading companies across the Asia-Pacific region on management and leadership.

With extensive experience as an Industrial-Organisational Psychologist, Evan works effectively at all organisational levels, applying his research and practical expertise to guide human behaviour. He believes that adaptability and the human capability for partnership and collaboration, rather than mere strength or intelligence, is key to corporate success, and helps leaders develop their unique strengths accordingly.

Educated in the United States and Hong Kong, Evan pursued his passion for understanding human minds and behaviours. His comprehensive consulting and corporate experience spans across strategic and operational levels, encompassing management alignment, stakeholder partnership, leadership development, talent assessment, psychometric testing, performance management and training facilitation, among other areas.

Mr James Wong

Mr James Wong

Background

Mr. Wong, an experienced university and college psychology lecturer, masterfully employs various psychological techniques in his teaching, facilitating students' knowledge absorption. With a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Hong Kong, followed by a Master's degree in Educational Psychology from the United States, Mr. Wong's academic background is both diverse and comprehensive.

His exceptional aptitude for psychology is evident in his outstanding examination results. Notably, he outperformed 92% of global test-takers in the GRE Psychology test. This expertise translates into his remarkable ability to guide students in tackling psychology exams effectively.

Beyond academia, Mr. Wong has been a prominent figure in Hong Kong's popular music industry since 2009, earning accolades as a producer, arranger, and composer. In recent years, he has innovatively merged his musical talents with positive psychology principles, developing unique methods to enhance students' overall life satisfaction.

Mr Michael Fung

Background

Michael Fung, a registered clinical psychologist, brings a wealth of knowledge cultivated through his diverse educational journey. His academic path led him from a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, to a Master's in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hong Kong.

Mr. Fung has established himself as a versatile professional, with expertise spanning cognitive behavioral therapy, forensic psychology, positive psychology, and cross-cultural counseling. His teaching approach garners widespread acclaim for its engaging nature and his exceptional ability to bridge theoretical concepts with real-world applications.

Beyond the academic sphere, Mr. Fung showcases a deep commitment to community service. He regularly conducts workshops and seminars on mental health awareness and personal development, demonstrating his dedication to both scholarly pursuits and practical implementation. Entry Requirements

Applicants should

a) hold a bachelor's degree awarded by a recognized university or equivalent; or

b) hold an associate degree / a higher diploma or equivalent, and have at least 2 years of work experience relating to staff supervision.

Applicants with other qualifications and substantial senior-level work experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
