As early summer brings vibrant growth, it is the perfect season to explore life and appreciate culture. The HKU SPACE ALUMNI recently hosted two special talks, guiding alumni into the wisdom of Chinese dietary therapy and immersing them in the century-old heritage of Pu-erh tea, rejuvenating both body and mind.
Debunking myths of Chinese dietary therapy
Prevention is better than cure, and dietary nourishment surpasses medicinal supplements. In the “Eat Well, Live Well” talk held on 29 May, registered Chinese medicine practitioner Dr Jenny Tung started with the ancient wisdom of the Huangdi Neijing, combining it with modern nutritional perspectives to explain the importance of the spleen and stomach as the foundation of health. Dr Tung not only cleared up common myths about over-supplementing but also provided practical dietary advice tailored to Hong Kong's summer weather. During the Q&A session, alumni asked enthusiastic questions, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
Uncovering Hong Kong’s rich tea culture
The closing prices of Pu-erh tea at auctions recently have reached millions of dollars, earning it the reputation of "drinkable antiques." In the “Pu-erh Tea” talk on 30 June, Dr TM Kwong, Senior Academic Advisor of the College of Humanities and Law, unveiled the mysteries of Pu-erh tea for our alumni. Remarkably, Hong Kong is the very birthplace and keeper of modern Pu-erh tea culture. Drawing on more than a decade of deep research into its history, Dr Kwong shared Hong Kong's unique role in this cultural heritage. He also demonstrated his tips on tasting and brewing, allowing alumni to enjoy the premium tea and experience its distinct flavours.
