On 17 September 2026, a delegation by Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, made a special visit to Youyi Campus, Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) for an exchange visit. The delegation included Dr Joey Lam, Head of College of Business and Finance and Mainland Affairs Office, and Ms Joyce Boon, Head of Division of English, Community College. The purpose of this visit was to conduct an in-depth investigation into the operational status of the jointly developed " Diploma in Foundation Studies (E-learning Mode)" (eDFS) programme, observe the teaching organizsation and effectiveness of remote instruction firsthand in the classroom, and engage in in-depth dialogue with the new students, continuing to promote educational integration and comprehensive cooperation between the two regions.
At the cooperative symposium between the two institutions, Mr Yingqun Zhang, Party Secretary of the School of Continuing Education (SCE) of NPU, and Vice Dean Dong Hao extended a sincere welcome to Professor Lee and his delegation. Both parties reviewed the fruitful achievements of the programme over the past year in areas such as credit course articulation, joint academic affairs management, and the integration of educational models between the two locations. They reached a high degree of consensus on strictly adhering to teaching quality and optimising talentcultivation.
In his concluding remarks at the symposium, Professor Lee stated that the cooperative education programme, with eDFS as its vehicle, is a vivid example of promoting in-depth educational exchange between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong and building a growth ladder for students to reach the international stage. As HKU SPACE approaches its 70th-anniversary milestone, the School has always remained true to its founding mission of promoting continuing education and whole-person development, actively serving the construction of the GBA and the overall national education development strategy. Starting from this new point, HKU SPACE will deepen its synergy and collaboration with NPU, comprehensively supporting students' outstanding growth in all aspects, including curriculum development, faculty exchange, and further education pathways, to jointly write a new chapter in the collaborative cultivation of international talent between the two regions.
During the visit, Professor Lee and his delegation conducted a site visit of the campus's teaching spaces and academic support facilities, comprehensively inspecting the learning environment and resource support after the programme was relocated from the Taicang Smart Port to the main Youyi Campus. Professor Lee entered a classroom to observe a lesson, gaining an in-depth understanding of the blended online and offline teaching interactions and classroom rhythm. He expressed his appreciation for the professional standards demonstrated by the SCE at NPU in teaching collaboration, daily operations, and student support.
The subsequent "Dialogue with the Director" was held in a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere. Professor Lee sat and talked with the new students, carefully listening to their thoughts and concerns regarding the improvement of English proficiency, adapting to Hong Kong-style academic norms, adjusting to the diverse life in Hong Kong, and future diversified pathways for further education. Drawing on the distinct characteristics of Hong Kong's higher education and HKU SPACE's nearly seventy years of educational experience, Professor Lee provided constructive and enlightening answers one by one.
Professor Lee particularly encouraged the students to establish clear learning goals and plans for further studies as early as possible, and to break down long-term goals into daily English accumulation, academic improvement in every course, and each personal breakthrough. He encouraged everyone to cherish the preparatory study period at NPU, to translate plans into actions, to build a solid academic and linguistic foundation, to enhance their autonomous learning abilities, and to actively broaden their international horizons in full preparation for future studies in Hong Kong and for stepping onto a broader international stage.
