Since the 1970s, the School has been offering a variety of programmes focusing on professional training in the fields of Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology Testing and Laboratory Management, ranging from introductory level to master’s degrees. Some of these courses emphasize on laboratory work, and this distinguishes us from other self-financed continuing education providers. All programmes are taught by dedicated and actively practicing professionals to ensure the academic quality of our programmes. This may explain why we are the leading part-time professional training provider in biomedical sciences.

This programme is for those wishing to progress to more senior positions in medical laboratories. Students are required to complete a research project and six modules, which will be taught in a blended mode with online tutorials, lectures, hands-on practicals and face-to-face tutorials.

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field of biology and computational science. It uses computer programmes to compare and analyse the sequences of biological molecules, which usually refers to DNA, RNA, or protein. Bioinformatics aims to determine gene and protein functions, reveal evolutionary relationships, predict 3-D structure of proteins, and most importantly to identify the genetic cause of diseases. After completion of this programme, students can pursue further studies in bioinformatics and precision medicine at Master level.
The programme aims to provide students with the knowledge of genetics and genomic technologies; the operational skills of Windows and Linux computing environment; and the fundamental programming skills for the analysis of biological and clinical data. It also covers the applications of the software, database, and scripts to identify the genetic cause of diseases.

Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, students should be able to
1. describe the process of haemopoiesis and enumerate the characteristics of blood cells;
2. apply appropriate laboratory techniques to examine and analyse clinical samples;
3. differentiate between normal and abnormal blood cell morphologies; and
4. interpret laboratory findings in the context of common haematological disorders.
By equipping students with both fundamental and advanced skills to perform and interpret immunological diagnostic tests, with an emphasis on hypersensitivities, autoimmune diseases, autoantibody testing, and clinical practice in Hong Kong, students will be well prepared to perform appropriate clinical immunology tests in medical laboratories.

1. explain the pathophysiology of hypersensitivity and autoimmune diseases reactions, and discuss the clinical significance of common immunological diagnostic tests in Hong Kong;
2. apply appropriate laboratory techniques to perform autoantibody tests and multiplex allergy assays;
3. interpret and analyse the data and results of clinical immunology laboratory tests; and
4. demonstrate safe laboratory practices and adherence to specified safety regulations.

This programme aims to enhance the professional competence of Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) in clinical mycology. By providing fundamental and advanced technologies in the identification and examination of the 2 commonest clinical fungi, including aspergillus and yeast, graduates will be well prepared to perform appropriate clinical tests on clinical fungi in medical laboratories.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, students should be able to
1. Explain the clinical characteristics of common aspergillus and yeast, and discuss the disease symptoms caused by their infection;
2. Apply appropriate laboratory techniques to identify and examine the pathogens in the clinical samples;
3. Interpret and analyse the data and results of laboratory tests; and
4. Demonstrate safe laboratory practices and adherence to specified safety regulations.
