The "Arrangement on Reciprocal Recognition and Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters by the Courts of the Mainland and of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" has brought about increased interaction between the legal jurisdictions of mainland China and Hong Kong. This arrangement came into effect simultaneously in both regions on January 29, 2024. As a result, foreign-related lawyers from the People's Republic of China (PRC) will now have a greater role to play in facilitating the recognition and enforcement of judgments by mainland courts and gaining access to the Hong Kong legal industry. In order to enhance their competence and professionalism in handling Hong Kong-related cases and litigations, PRC lawyers may seek to qualify as Hong Kong or UK lawyers. By doing so, they can better navigate the legal landscape of Hong Kong and cross-border matters. HKU SPACE LAW offers multiple programs to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the Hong Kong legal system effectively. Successful completion of these programs can eventually lead to admission to the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) program—the only certificate program that qualifies individuals as Hong Kong lawyers. The talk will analyse the current state of the legal industry in Hong Kong and explore the opportunities for PRC lawyers.
