Highlights

The programme provides students with advanced and in-depth learning in forensic anthropology and equips them to critically evaluate and apply professional methods to complex forensic cases. It enables students to understand how scientific foundations, limitations, and ethical responsibilities interact within legal and humanitarian contexts. Students will gain an advanced professional experience in integrating skeletal and taphonomic evidence, translating scientific knowledge into defensible forensic conclusions.

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. critically interpret skeletal evidence from juvenile remains, recognising variability, uncertainty, and limitations in forensic anthropological analysis;
  2. evaluate the scientific foundations, applicability, and constraints of methods used in establishing the biological profile, and justify their use in specific forensic contexts;
  3. apply differential reasoning to distinguish trauma, pathology, and postmortem modification, and assess the risks of overinterpretation in complex or fragmentary cases;
  4. integrate contextual, taphonomic, and osteological information to support defensible forensic interpretations and case reconstructions;
  5. analyse emerging applications of forensic anthropology, including disaster victim identification, investigations of crimes against humanity, and the application of AI tools, with attention to interdisciplinary collaboration, evidential limits, technological reliability, algorithmic bias, and ethical considerations; and
  6. demonstrate professional judgement and ethical responsibility in the interpretation and communication of forensic anthropological findings, particularly in legal, humanitarian, and technology-enhanced contexts.

Programme Details

1. Introduction

Review of core forensic anthropology principles with emphasis on advanced professional judgement

Distinction between method application, validation, and defensibility

Discussion of uncertainty, expert responsibility, and expectations for advanced-level interpretation

2.  Juvenile Remains

Advanced interpretation of juvenile skeletal remains, focusing on developmental variability, conflicting age indicators, and limitations of estimation methods

Ethical, legal, and humanitarian implications of juvenile identification and age assessment

3. Dental Evidence

Use of dental evidence in forensic identification

Evaluation of dental wear, pathology, restorations, and comparative records

Discussion of fragmentary dentition, taphonomic effects, and limitations of dental evidence in forensic contexts

4. Pathology and Trauma

Advanced differential reasoning in distinguishing trauma, pathological changes, and postmortem modification

Assessment of timing (antemortem, perimortem, postmortem), equifinality, and interpretive challenges in fragmentary remains

Interpretation of chronic and complex skeletal changes, including degenerative conditions, infection, metabolic disease, and surgical intervention

Emphasis on overdiagnosis, narrative bias, and responsible reporting of ambiguous findings

5. Cremation and Heat-Altered Remains

Analysis of heat-induced skeletal changes, including fracture patterns, color change, warping, and shrinkage

Differentiation between thermal alteration, trauma, and taphonomic damage

Limitations of identification and interpretation in cremated remains

6. Context and Forensic Taphonomy

Role of scene context and depositional environment in forensic interpretation

Evaluation of environmental versus cultural modification, secondary deposition, and associative evidence

Integration of taphonomic data into case reconstruction

7. Ancestry Estimation Challenges

Critical examination of ancestry estimation methods, including population affinity, statistical versus typological approaches, and sources of bias

Discussion of limitations, misinterpretation, and ethical considerations in forensic reporting

8. Emerging Topics Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) and Crimes Against Humanity

Application of forensic anthropology in mass fatality incidents, humanitarian investigations, and international contexts

Overview of DVI frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the role of forensic anthropologists in investigations of crimes against humanity

9. Application and Risks of AI Tools in Forensic Anthropology

Exploration of machine learning (ML) and deep-learning algorithms for automated biological profiling (age, sex, ancestry, and stature estimation) and validation of their forensic reliability

Application of AI-assisted 3D virtual reconstruction, image segmentation, and taphonomic pattern recognition for the study of fragmentary, cremated, or commingled remains

Evaluation of ethical implications, algorithmic bias, data privacy, and limitations of AI-supported interpretations in professional judgement and expert testimony

10. Ethics and Responsibility

Integration of ethical principles into forensic anthropological practice

Discussion of dual loyalty, expert testimony, ethical silence, and professional accountability

Reflection on the responsibilities and limits of forensic expertise
