Highlights

The programme aims to: 


1. introduce the concepts, principles and theories that underpin the practice of music therapy in relation to children; 

2. develop students’ ethical responsibilities in the practice of music therapy in health and special education; 

3. enable students to understand the diverse and growing music therapy practice in Hong Kong;  

4. equip students with independent research and analytical skills for the practice of music therapy; and  

5. Equip students with the necessary skills to prepare and execute music therapy sessions that include effective assessment, design, facilitation, and evaluation for child clients. 

 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. employ music as a medium to stimulate positive health and educational changes in child clients to meet therapeutic needs;
  2. investigate the diverse and growing music therapy practice in Hong Kong;
  3. acquire the necessary guitar and singing skills to conduct music therapy activities; and
  4. acquire  music therapy skills to design and critically appraise a therapeutic programme or approach, within the appropriate ethical standards of practice for child clients.

Programme Details

The Postgraduate Diploma in Music Therapy will be offered in blended learning mode. The medium of delivery and assessment is English.

Award including attendance

Upon successful completion of the programme, students who have passed the assessment with attendance no less than 80% will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE a "Postgraduate Diploma in Music Therapy”.

Graduates of this programme who meet the entrance requirements of the Master of Music Therapy (by coursework) of the University of Melbourne, Australia will be granted exemption of four modules (25% of the programme) if accepted into the Masters (by coursework) programme.

The module aims at introducing the concepts, principles and theories that underpin the practice of music therapy in relation to children.

Music Therapy Methods Introduction (Online)

This module aims at preparing students for the use of music therapy methods in professional practice. It focuses on foundational skills across the areas of repertoire, improvisation, song writing and receptive methods. Skill development focuses on the reproduction of known songs and developing capacity to substitute lyrics when therapeutically suitable as well as to extend the musical frameworks of known songs. Students will also develop skills in creating playlists for therapeutic purposes using pre-recorded music.

Music Therapy in Hong Kong Context and Advocacy 

his module aims at developing students' abilities to investigate and understand the diverse music therapy practices in Hong Kong. They will gain insights into the ethical considerations and limitations of music therapy while applying their acquired practical skills and knowledge in the local context. By the end of the module, students will be equipped to explore and analyze the various applications of music therapy, make informed ethical decisions, and effectively apply music therapy techniques within the specific cultural and social context of Hong Kong. 12

Professional Practice in Music Therapy (Blended)

The module is an interactive module which aims at providing foundational practice skills in observation, reflection, design and planning of sessions to suit diverse contexts. The hours spent in class, and notetaking after class, are credited as placement hours for students who go on to do further study in music therapy (specifically the University of Melbourne's Master of Music Therapy course).  21

Music Psychology Research (Online)

This module aims at offering an introduction to music psychology research, covering a wide range of topics related to music, the mind, learning, and human development across different stages of life. Students will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field, including music therapists, behavioral neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, and experimental psychologists. Key areas of focus include emotions, cognition, and memory. Through this course, students will gain a solid foundation in the fundamental principles and current research findings in music psychology, preparing them for further exploration and study in the field.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall: 

(a)

(i) hold a Bachelor of Music, or 

(ii) hold a Bachelor of Music Education, or 

(iii) hold a Bachelor degree in an allied health or education profession  (e.g. teaching, occupational therapy, nursing, etc.) awarded by a recognized recognisedrecognised  universityinstitution.        

If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants shall provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:  

1. an overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or 

2. a score of 550 or above in the paper-  based TOEFL, or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 or above  in the internet-based TOEFL; or 

3. HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or 

4. HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3 or above; or 

5. equivalent qualifications 

AND 

(b) have attained ABRSM Grade 5 or above in theory and Grade 6 or above in one practical instrument (excluding voice);  

AND 

(c) have completed at least one psychology module (e.g. modules in behavioural neuroscience, learning and cognition, developmental psychology, social psychology) at university year 1 level at a recognised institution; 

AND 

(d) pass the admission selection interview.  

 

Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on individual merit. Students should have achieved a certain level of guitar proficiency (i.e. singing with a guitar using 4 different chords (including bar chords) and at least two types of strumming or picking) before Module 2 - ‘Music Therapy Methods Introduction’.

Enrolment Method

Please submit the following documents to any HKU SPACE enrolment counters or post to HKU SPACE, 19/F, Island East Campus, 494 King's Road, NorthPoint, Hong Kong (attention to Ms Chloe Ip).

  1. completed application form (SF26);
  2. a copy of academic transcripts; and
  3. crossed cheque of HK$600 for the application fee (payable to "HKU SPACE").

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
