Highlights

The programme aims to provide students with the essential knowledge of business intelligence and data automation. It illustrates various techniques of data preparation, data transformation and data automation using computational tools. The programme also discusses real-life cases related to the usage of business intelligence, practical applications and implications of data automation in business.

2. illustrate techniques of data transformation, aggregation and consolidation using computer software;
3. apply computational tools to perform data transformation and data automation; and

(1) Introduction to Business Intelligence (BI)

Overview of BI
Principles of BI and business analytics
BI powered by business strategies and technologies

(2) Introduction to data preparation and data automation

Fundamentals of big data and data automation
Data wrangling and processing: data cleansing, data transformation, data consolidation, data aggregation and data automation
Introduction to computational tools for data preparation: Microsoft Power Query, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau Prep Builder and Glue DataBrew
Data privacy and ethical usage of data

(3) Techniques of data transformation, aggregation and consolidation

Data filtering: filtering rows, removing unnecessary columns, eliminating duplicates
Data matching and rearranging: matching columns with another table, transposing table data, pivoting and unpivoting columns
Data extraction and aggregation: extracting information from a data column, aggregating data with group-by operations
Data merging and consolidation: combining files from different workbooks, combining tables on different worksheets, appending queries, extracting information from a filename, understanding the differences between duplicating and referencing a data set

Techniques of data automation: reviewing empty cells and errors, stepwise automation, handling data error, use of parameters for data selection, avoiding hard-coding source file path

Assessment method: Two in-class exercise + Individual Project Presentation

Upon successful completion of the programme, students who have passed the continuous assessment and final assessment with attendance no less than 70% will be awarded with the Certificate for Module (Business Intelligence and Data Automation) within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

Mr Danny Chan

As a passionate and highly committed data science and computer professional, MrChan sees the importance of lifelong learning and keeps himself abreast of the latest data technologies. He is highly proficient in the areas of visual analytics, business intelligence (BI) solutions, statistical analysis, data science, machine learning and cloud-based computing.
Mr Chan graduated from the Mathematics Department in CUHK. He is a seasoned data analytics professional with a strong background in IT, Retail and Supply Chain Industries. He obtained three master’s degrees from three universities, namely Risk Management Science from CUHK, Quantitative Analysis for Business from the City University of HK and Industrial Logistics Systems from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
In 2021, Mr Chan accredited the title of Tableau Certified Associate Consultant. He is also a principal consultant for a data technology consulting services company, specialized in implementing BI solutions and report data automation.

Ms Agnes Tea

Ms Agnes Tea is a Chartered Certified Accountant with extensive experience in commercial finance, specializing in retail, luxury retail, and fast-moving consumer goods. She is currently working in a multinational corporation, where she spearheads initiatives in business analytics and digital transformation, focusing on automation and data visualization. Besides, she is passionate about leveraging technology to enhance finance functions and drive operational efficiency. Her practical expertise encompasses dashboard development via Power BI and Tableau, Python programming, Power Automate, and Power Query. Moreover, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Lingnan University and a master’s degree in Business Analytics with distinction from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Currently, she is pursuing an MBA at HKUST, further bridging her skills in finance and business analytics. This combination of industry experience and academic foundation allows Agnes to provide valuable insights and practical knowledge in her teaching role.

Mr Ivan Lau

Mr Ivan Law brings over two decades of combined experience in education, applied data science, and the finance industry, with a proven track record of empowering learners to master in-demand technical skills. Holding a BEng in Computer Science from HKUST and an MSc in Financial Management from the University of London, Ivan leverages his interdisciplinary background to make complex data science concepts accessible to students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. As a part-time lecturer at CityU SCOPE, he has delivered over 2,100 instructional hours across 8 cohorts of adult learners, specializing in Python, Pandas, NumPy, data visualization (Matplotlib/Seaborn/Plotly), and AI/ML foundations. Rooted in rigorous project-based learning, his teaching philosophy prioritizes clarity, practical application, and active engagement. He designs interactive exercises and real-world projects to help learners translate theoretical concepts into actionable skills that meet workplace needs. Complementing his teaching practice is 18+ years of experience in senior roles across the banking and hedge fund industry, where he led teams in operations, risk management, and compliance at both local and US-based hedge fund firms. As Director of Rivershape Ltd., Ivan now designs and delivers professional data science training and deploys AI/ML pipelines for SMEs. This hands-on, up-to-date experience building industry-ready solutions ensures his teaching curricula remain current with the latest tools and market demands, which further strengthens his ability to connect analytical rigor with business insights.

Mr Fred Chong

Mr Fred Cheng is a seasoned Data Analyst with over a decade of experience in the financial sector. He has honed his expertise at top-tier multinational institutions, including Morgan Stanley, Julius Baer, and Singapore Exchange. With a strong foundation in data wrangling, analysis, report automation, dashboard development, and machine learning, he leverages data-driven strategies to enhance business decision-making and optimize performance.
Fred holds a Master’s degree in Business Analytics from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Online Enrolment

HKU SPACE provides 24-hour online application and payment service for students to apply to selected award-bearing programmes and to enrol in most open admission courses (courses enrolled on a first come, first served basis) via the Internet. Applicants may settle the payment by using either "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard online. Online WeChat Pay, Online AliPay and Faster Payment System (FPS) are also available for continuing enrolment in the same programme, if online service is offered.

For continuing enrolment in the same programme

The standard ‘Enrolment/Payment Slip’ is designed for students of award-bearing programmes or remaining programmes in a suite of programmes requiring continuing enrolment and it applies to most programmes.
Students should complete the “Enrolment/Payment Slip” which will be made available by relevant programme staff and return the slip to any HKU SPACE enrolment centre or post it to the relevant programme staff with appropriate fee payment.

Please note the followings for programme/course enrollment:

To make an application online, you will need a computer with connection to the Internet and a web browser with JavaScript enabled. Google Chrome is recommended.
Applicants should not leave the online application idle for more than 10 minutes. Otherwise, applicants must restart the application process.
Only Early Bird Discount is supported for Online Applicants (Application). To enjoy other types of discount, please visit one of our enrolment centres.
During the online application process, asynchronous application and payment submission may occur. Successful payment may not guarantee successful application. In case of unsuccessful submission, our programme staff will contact you shortly.
Applicants are reminded that they should only apply for the same programme/course once through counter or online application.
For online enrolment, a payment confirmation page would be displayed after payment has been made successfully. In addition, a confirmation email would also be sent to your email account. You are advised to keep your payment confirmation for future enquiries.
Fees paid are not refundable except as statutorily provided or under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment).
If admission is by selection, the official receipt is not a guarantee that your application has been accepted. We will inform you of the result as soon as possible after the closing date for application. Unsuccessful applicants will be given a refund of programme/course fee if already paid.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.

3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Notes

If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.
Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment.
In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
