Highlights

Persuasive business writing aims to convince readers to take a particular action or adopt a particular point of view. It is a way of communicating an idea in a manner that is compelling and convincing to readers. Writers use techniques such as evidence-based arguments, emotional appeals, and conversational tone to persuade readers to decide in favour of the writer’s position. Persuasive writing is often used in marketing, advertising, public relations, fundraising, and other business communications where the writer wants to influence the readers’ opinion or behaviour. This 18-hour short course will enlighten students’ understanding of the discourse structures and word choice in persuasive business writing.

Programme Details

This course will introduce the discourse structures in persuasive business writing. The instructor will lead students to examine, discuss and share their findings on how authors used discourse techniques and choice of lexis to affect readers’ perceptions in the provided business writing examples. Students are required to finish their in-class and take-home written assignments and analyse writings of their own and their peers to solidify their learning outcomes.

By the end of this course, students will understand the principles of persuasive writing in the business context and the importance of aligning their messages with their business goals. Students will be able to identify the readers’ needs, develop and present strong arguments, use proper persuasive language, tone and style, and present complex ideas in a clear and concise manner that convinces readers.
