MIS Alumni Reflection: Growth, Impact, and Insights

As an early-career library professional studying part-time while working, the Master of Information Studies delivered jointly by Charles Sturt University and HKU SPACE provided a solid, relevant learning experience. The curriculum was up to date and aligned with sector developments, covering areas such as website design and usability, the information society, collection management and metadata. It also offered exposure to specialised topics—for example, digital preservation and knowledge management—that early-career roles rarely have the opportunity to engage with.

My interactions with lecturers were consistently positive. CSU lecturers provided clear structure and rigorous academic framing, and their assignment feedback was detailed and actionable. HKU SPACE lecturers complemented this with practical, local case studies and timely guidance. The quality of feedback across the programme helped me reflect, improve, and consider problems from different perspectives.

The programme has contributed directly to my professional growth. I have applied usability principles to enhance aspects of our current website and become more thoughtful when updating online content to improve clarity and findability. The project and event management components have encouraged me to plan more structurally, improving coordination and outcomes. Overall, I gained solid professional knowledge and practical skills that will support my career development.

Looking ahead, two enhancements could further strengthen the experience: better platform integration between CSU and HKU SPACE, and more hands-on exposure to tools, which would be especially helpful for early-career professionals who may not yet have opportunities to use them on the job.

I would recommend the MIS to professionals seeking a rigorous, practice-oriented pathway.
