About the Trainer

Mr Peter Brokenshire was raised in Malaya and educated in England. He graduated in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) and joined the British Army, first in the infantry and then as an intelligence analyst, and met his wife in Hong Kong in 1982. He was then self-employed in sales and IT, and gained a BSc in Natural Sciences and an MSc in e-Commerce. He then worked for the Department for Transport in IT procurement, negotiating and managing large data management, IT services and software development contracts. In 2012 he returned to the Far East and teaches English in various tertiary education institutes in China and Hong Kong. His interests include languages, history, natural sciences and fish keeping.

Students will be impressed by his sense of humour and dynamic teaching methods.

The word "elocution" refers to the art of careful public speaking, using clear pronunciation and good breathing to control the voice.

This short course is specially designed for advanced English speakers who wish to improve their professional image by modifying their accent to sound more like a native British English speaker. Learners will typically be employed or possess an interest in journalism, public relations, marketing, media and communications and live (simultaneous) translation, but motivated applicants in other fields will be considered. The determined student should finish with an understanding of his/her pronunciation ‘issues’ and of how to modify his/her accent over time, after the course has finished.

This course will cover:

  • The components of accent: rhythm, pitch (intonation and tone), stress, dialect.
  • Pronunciation: the 44 phonemes of British English, flow, common issues for Chinese learners of English, finding correct pronunciations.
  • British vs American English.
  • Image and professionalism.

A small portion of the course will be theory and the rest will be practical, starting with an initial assessment of students’ accents, and then practising the concepts and ideas presented and evaluating sample recordings and students’ own accents.

12 hours (4 x 3-hour workshops)

After this course, students who would like to learn and practise more advanced elocution skills may progress to British English Elocution (2)

Tentative Course Dates: 19, 26 April & 10, 17 May 2020
