Engineering and Science Library and Information Studies
This distance-learning course, offered in collaboration with Charles Sturt University, Australia, is supplemented by local tutorials. It is for those interested in the field of library, information, records, archives and knowledge management.
The obtained academic qualification has full recognition by Australian Library and Information Association and other international library associations.
Exemption will be granted to graduates of Higher Diploma in Library and Information Management.
In the 21st century, the library field is undergoing numerous changes that are redefining the traditional roles of and job opportunities for information professionals. Factors responsible for the changing nature of library field include the emergence of new technologies, changing user expectations, etc. In order to respond to the ongoing changes, the HKU SPACE collaborated with the Charles Sturt University, Australia (CSU) delivers the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of information studies for the prospective information professionals to equip their skills to meet the increasingly needs from diverse users. The programmes are conducted in distance learning mode supplemented by local tutorials. The qualification awarded has the full recognition by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and internationally by other professional bodies such as American Library Association (ALA) as a librarian.
This is the entry level programme. Local tutorials are led by prominent and experienced professionals in the field.

Exemption will be granted to graduates of Higher Diploma in Library and Information Management (HDLIM). Exemption may also be granted to graduates of Associate Degree or Higher Diploma not from Library and Information Science discipline. Request for exemption should be made at the time of application.

Assessments are mainly based on assignments and written examinations (most subjects may not have examinations). If students fail a subject, they have to re-take the subject in a session where the subject is being offered. A retake fee of HK$12,000 per subject (subject to change) will apply.Duration

This is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead.
1. (i) complete the HKDSE with an aggregate score of 13^ based on the four core subjects, Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies, and the best grade in one Category A elective subject. (Category B and C subjects are not included); and
(ii) provide evidence of English proficiency#, such as
(a) an overall band of 6.0 with subtest of 5.5 in the IELTS; or
(b) a score of 550 in the paper-based TOEFL or a score of 213 in the computer-based TOEFL; or
(c) an overall score of 54 with a minimum of 46 in all communicative skills in Pearson Test of English; or equivalent.
2. have gained HKALE Grade E in 2 AL subjects including AS Use of English; or equivalent;
3. hold an associate degree or a higher diploma awarded by a recognised institution.
Applicants with other equivalent qualifications and relevant work experience will be considered on individual merit.
^ A subject Level 1 is equal to 1 point up to a Level 5 is equal to 5 points, 5* and 5** equals 6 points. Except for Compulsory Mathematics where Level 1 is equal to 0.5 points up to Level 5 equal to 2.5 points.

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.
2. Cheque Or Bank draft
Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and the applicant’s name.. You may either:
- bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
- or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment
Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, continuing students of award-bearing programmes, if their programmes offer online service, may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay and Faster Payment System (FPS). - If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolement Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circustance.
- Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder's credit card account.
- In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
- Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
- Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be repsonsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
- For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to "HKU SPACE" to any of our enrolment centres.
