Highlights

This is a programme specifically for future coaches and sports educators. This specialisation means that you’ll have the skills, knowledge and understanding that may not be taught in a general sports degree.
The curriculum of the programme reflects staff expertise and research interests, key trends in associated national, international professional bodies and current sport policy, and the relevant national benchmarks.
Embedded transferable skills in areas such as information technology, problem-solving, communication and reflective practice will help students to prepare for a global market and pursue lifelong learning.
  • Unique top-up degree programmes offered by one of the top universities in the UK for international undergraduate study in sport;
  • Completed in 36 months of part-time study;
  • Work placement opportunities in public and private sectors.

Programme Details

The entire BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching programme comprises 360 credits in total.  Students enrolled in this programme are required to take 120 credits worth of modules each year and normally complete the entire programme in three years of full-time study in the UK.

In Hong Kong, graduates of the Higher Diploma in Sport Coaching and Sport Performance  awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE are exempted from 180 credits.  Students with maximum credit exemption will be required to undertake seven modules and a dissertation over three years of study to gain a further 180 credits to be eligible for graduation.

Programme Objectives

1. Produce graduates who can demonstrate a critical appreciation and contemporary knowledge of the skills and principles required for effective coaching practice and who have developed the core competencies required to coach athletes throughout their stages of development.

2. Enable students to closely examine the art and science of coaching, focusing on both the application of sport science disciplines in the coaching context and the athlete-coach interaction.

3. Enable students to address theory and principles governing coaching practice and includes practical coaching opportunities together with a chance for individuals to reflect upon and modify their own coaching behaviour.

4. Provide students with an academically and vocationally relevant curriculum designed to stimulate students to become active learners, self-reflectors, and develop effective evaluative skills with the ability to question existing practices in sports coaching allowing them to acquire a range of transferable skills that will equip them for employment, enterprise or further study.

5. Allow students to evaluate and modify their own behaviour and that of performers in a range of activities so that they can fully appreciate the role of the professional coach and understand the qualities required to coach effectively developing their ability to communicate ideas to a range of audiences using a variety of media.

Assessment

The programme incorporates a wide variety of assessment methods enabling the ways in which student achievement is measured and evaluated to be appropriate to the learning outcomes of each module. Appropriate techniques are chosen to fit the subject and context for the students involved. The range of assessment methods includes: porfolios, essays and assignments, oral presentations, article reviews, coaching plans, poster presentation, project reports, literature reviews, viva interview, interview and self reflection, group assessments and dissertation. Student achievement is assessed through reference to a set of generic grade descriptors (provided to students via a student handbook) with specific marking criteria identified within each module outline.

Award

Upon satisfactory completion of the programme, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Sport Coaching by the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.

Further Studies

Graduates may apply for entry to the Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Coaching and Development or Postgraduate Diploma in Sport and Recreation Management offered by HKU SPACE.
