Businesses in Hong Kong recognise the competitive advantages that come with innovation. It is estimated that the demand for professionals who excel in innovation will increase significantly. This need will be further heightened by the entrepreneurial frenzy that is going on in both Hong Kong and Mainland China. The Postgraduate Diploma in Product Innovation and Service Design (PISD) is designed to help students harness innovation to break through the domain limits of products and services. It will empower them to capitalise on market opportunities and transform their great ideas into reality.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The programme aims to equip middle to high level product/service development personnel and management personnel in general with the fundamental concept of the user-centred approach and its related management methodology. When they have to redesign their company’s value proposition (product+service) in business transformation, they will have the necessary skills and wherewithal to analyse the market opportunity, set the right strategy for development, apply innovative design concepts, identify and mitigate potential risks along the way. The programme is designed in such a way that it will provide its students with the necessary skills and knowledge to add value to their target customer (the user) through innovatively designed products and/or services.

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The programme consists of 11 modules:

  1. Innovation and Cross-sector Management
  2. Creativity and Business Breakthrough Strategy
  3. User Study in Persona and Scenario
  4. Value Opportunity Analysis: Product and Service Positioning
  5. Design Thinking and Service Innovation
  6. Concept Prototyping and Design
  7. Intellectual Property Asset Strategy
  8. Brand Commitment and Value-added Services
  9. Product Innovation and Commercialization
  10. Management of Risk and Uncertainty in Innovation
  11. Final Project

Upon completion of the above modules, students will be awarded within HKU System through HKU SPACE a Postgraduate Diploma in Product Innovation and Service Design. Meanwhile, only one module will be offered each month.

 

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. Analyse systematically the trends, needs and relevant values in the society to develop competitive value propositions (products + services);
  2. Set appropriate strategy and evaluation standards according to the development stages of innovative products/services;
  3. Manage cross-disciplinary teams efficiently, plan for resource needs and set direction for the development of innovative projects;
  4. Apply user-centered concept and the kind of innovation needed for the project ensuring all the details of the product and service implementation;
  5. Manage all the information and risks pertaining to the innovative project through which a novel value proposition is created;
  6. Utilize cutting-edge business knowledge to build good internal and external relationships with business partners, society and public.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should:
 
(a) hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognised institution, with 3 years’ relevant work experience; and
 
(b) provide evidence of English proficiency (if the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English) such as: 
 
(i)   an overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or
(ii)  a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or
(iii) HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or 
(iv) HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3 or above; or 
(v)  equivalent qualifications.
 
Applicants with other qualifications and relevant work experience will be considered on individual merit.

Please submit your application with all of the following documents to one of our enrolment centres in person or by post to the following address:

  1. Copy of HKID Card#;
  2. Certified true copies of full educational certificates and transcripts;
  3. Testimonials or other documentary proof of the applicant’s work experience;
  4. A 500-word letter outlining the applicant's education, training and working experience, and saying how he/she would benefit from the programme;
  5. Resume; and
  6. A crossed cheque or bank draft of HK$150 made payable to "HKU SPACE" as application fee (non-refundable)
# To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong for employment or as dependants, who do not need prior approval before taking up part-time studies. It is the responsibility of individual applicants to make appropriate visa arrangements. Holding an acceptance letter to a HKU SPACE academic programme/course does not guarantee the issue of a student visa.
 
Payment Method

Applicants may also pay the tuition fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself.
