The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Tourism Management (Part-time) is offered by HKU SPACE in collaboration with the University of Plymouth School of Tourism and Hospitality which is part of the University of Plymouth Faculty of Business. It is an 21-month part-time offshore degree programme which carries the same academic status and recognition as that offered to Plymouth’s on-campus graduates.
The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Tourism Management is a qualification designed to provide a strongly vocational theme relevant for a wide range of employment sectors in the Tourism industry. Tourism continues to be one of the largest growth industries. Its successful management depends on high quality business skills and the ability to provide consumer satisfaction.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The tourism top-up degree programme aims to enable students to gain a broad understanding of the development of tourism and have a critical awareness of the issues that underpin best practice in this field. In addition, the programme enables students to develop vocationally relevant managerial skills needed for employment or further study, so that students are well-prepared to meet the changing demands of society and the economy.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
A. Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate a detailed understanding of relevant concepts and characteristics appropriate in the study of tourism and be able to apply them creatively;
- generalise and question the nature, structure and significance of tourism;
- identify and illustrate the importance of planning, development and management of tourism and tourists in a variety of contexts;
- demonstrate an understanding of the underpinning principles of business and apply them creatively; and
- integrate subject specific knowledge and transferable skills to develop a specialism in depth, conduct a research investigation, and effectively report the findings.

Graduates have found exciting career opportunities all over the world. These include working with national tourism organisations, for specialist tour operators and travel organisations, and for tourism research and consultancy in the private sector. With the globalisation of the industry, new job opportunities are appearing in a host of countries, providing graduates with the option of travel.

The entire programme consists of 8 modules (20 credits each, except for Honours Project with 40 credits).
The programme will have 405 hours of contact in the form of lectures, tutorials and supervision. Except for the Honours Project, each module will consist of 30 hours of lectures and 15 hours of tutorials. University of Plymouth will send their professors out to Hong Kong to teach 15 hours for each of the five modules and will supervise the students for the Honours Project module over two terms. Local lecturers accredited by University of Plymouth will be appointed by HKU SPACE to deliver three modules with 30-hour lectures and 15-hour tutorial each.

The above programme structure is intended for use as a guide by prospective students. HKU SPACE and University of Plymouth reserve the right to vary the structure.
Students are expected to graduate from the registered programme of study upon satisfactory completion of all stated modules and the honours project, and they will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Tourism Management from University of Plymouth.
Assessment
All coursework of the programme will be conducted in English.
The mode of assessment is different from module to module but will be generally based on a combination of coursework (including assignments and tests/ projects). Throughout the programme, students will be assessed by a combination of:

- Tests (open/closed book) - if applicable
Delivery
All modules will be taught in English. Lecture notes, teaching materials and assessments will be in English as well.
On Campus Transfer
Overseas study opportunities for a full semester will be available for several students to study in Plymouth with all Hong Kong credits being counted toward the qualification. No additional tuition fees will be applied.
Award
Students who complete all modules (180 credits) will obtain Bachelor of Science (Honours) Tourism Management. Under extenuating circumstances, students who complete modules 1 - 6, 8 will obtain an ordinary degree, Bachelor of Science Tourism Management.
Further Studies
Upon graduation, students will have developed independent thinking skills, critical analysis of current hospitality and tourism management knowledge. Honours degree students will have undertaken a final-year project which includes data collection and analysis, therefore, students will be well-equipped with research skills necessary for further studies. Graduates with second-class honours are eligible to apply for the Master of Science Tourism and Hospitality Management programme, in collaboration with University of Plymouth at HKU SPACE (Full time: 12 months; Part time: 18 months), and they can enjoy 10% alumni discount of tuition fee.

This is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead.
1. Leadership
The module allows the student to explore the role of leadership within organizations and workplaces, with an emphasis on the tourism and hospitality industries, including both the practical and theoretical aspects of leadership and how the concept is changing over time. It also provides an introduction to leadership theories and techniques so that students can review the key elements of leadership and its use for different circumstances.
2. Festivals and Event Tourism
This module allows students to examine the importance of festivals and event tourism in relation to a tourist destination’s policy and planning strategies. This will determine the value of events to the tourism industry. The module will also examine the evolution of event tourism, and discuss the authenticity dilemma of event tourism with particular reference to festivals and festival tourism.
3. English for Academic Purposes
This module focuses on the academic English language content and skills which students need to master in order to study successfully. Students will receive input on academic vocabulary, academic writing skills, giving presentations and developing critical thinking and research skills. Students will be exposed to a range of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, group discussions, pair work, watching videos and listening activities. This module is interactive in nature and students are expected to take an active part in classroom activities. Students will be expected to study outside of class time and show initiativein this area and focus on developing their individual language and academic skills.
4. Cruise Operations Continuity Planning
This module considers the complex issues associated to managing change, evaluating risk and ensuring continuity for cruise operations. In order to achieve this, a critical appraisal of contemporary industry issues is undertaken. Thereafter, the module uses individual case study work centred on a cruise operation to enable students to apply their understanding of business continuity planning to a realistic problem.
5. Research Methods (pre-requisite module for "Honours Project")
This module investigates the potential contributions of different disciplines and approaches that help to explain the nature of businesses and the way in which they operate. The module examines the research methods used in investigations that focus on managing businesses, customers and target audiences
6. Crime and Sustainable Tourism
This module focuses on two contemporary tourism topics – crime and sustainable tourism. Included are the relationships between tourism and the environment and the principles, approaches and pitfalls to sustainable tourism management in an international context. The module generally focuses on tourists and the tourism industry, and the relationships between these and crime.
Specifically, this module aims to evaluate the contribution and impacts of tourism in social, environmental, political, cultural and other terms; to appreciate the ethical issues associated with tourism development, the importance and implications of sustainable approaches to tourism and issues associated with policies and practice in tourism management; and to develop an understanding of the relationships between tourism and crime.
7. Honours Project (divided into 2 parts)
The student integrates subject specific knowledge and skills to develop a specialist area of knowledge in depth and conducts their own research investigation and reports their findings with some guided supervision. This module aims to give the student an opportunity to develop a topic relevant to their programme of study in depth. It also enables a student to show their ability to integrate a range of knowledge and skills in tackling their project topic, whilst giving a student the experience of taking control of a major live assignment.
This module focuses on exploring and understanding a range of theoretical approaches to developing strategies for businesses in the tourism,hospitality and events (THE) sectors and applying these principles to a live consultancy project. The learner is provided with the opportunity to gain experience of working with a business in THE industries on a consultancy basis, either in a research or strategic development setting. Learners will engage with a client business to mutually identify a suitable project and develop findings and guidelines to inform a new strategic direction.
Except for the Honours Project, each module consists of both Block Teaching Week and Tutorial weeks, lasting for approximately 2 months.

For Honour Project, it consists of 30-hour lecture, 12-hour tutorial and many face-to-face and online consultation sessions. Students will be supervised by Plymouth University lecturers over a period of approximately 8 months.
Applicants shall:
1. hold an Advanced Diploma / Higher Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management / Tourism and Marketing Management / M.I.C.E. and Event Management awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE;
OR
2. A.(i) hold an Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree /Higher Diploma in Tourism
Management granted by a recognised institution;
OR
(ii) hold an Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree /Higher Diploma in other related
disciplines such as Business, Marketing, Management, Leisure, and Recreation Studies
granted by a recognized institution;
and
B. Provide evidence of English proficiency such as :
(a) HKCEE English Language at Level 2; OR
(b) HKCEE English Language (Syllabus B) at Grade E (Grade C in the case of
English Language(Syllabus A)); OR
(c) HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 2; ; OR
(d) an overall band of 6.0 or above in the IELTS ; OR
(e) a score of 500 in the paper-based TOEFL or a score of 173 in the computer-
based TOEFL and a score of 4.5 in Test of Written English.
OR
3. have a degree of other disciplines.
Applicants from (2) and (3) may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants from (2Aii) and (3) may be required to take and pass additional modules based on individual merit before the start of the programme.
