The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Cruise Management (Part-time) is offered by HKU SPACE in collaboration with the University of Plymouth School of Tourism and Hospitality which is part of the University of Plymouth Faculty of Business. It is an 21-month part-time offshore degree programme which carries the same academic status and recognition as that offered to Plymouth’s on-campus graduates.
The global cruise industry is experiencing rapid growth internationally, there are countless opportunities for rewarding careers on-board ships for those seeking to combine global travel and a career in hospitality and tourism. This programme has been offered at University of Plymouth since 2004 in UK. During this period many of the graduates have pursued permanent careers in the cruise ship sector working with companies such as Celebrity cruises, Royal Caribbean, Disney cruises, Princess cruises as well as P&O and Cunard.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
This programme aims to enable students to gain a thorough understanding of this unique employment area and have a critical awareness of the issues that underpin best practice. In addition, the programme enables students to develop vocationally relevant managerial skills needed for employment in the global cruise industry and the wider hospitality sector. Overnight cruise line field trip and cruise terminal visits will be arranged for students to deepen their understandings of the cruise industry. Students will also have opportunity to apply for the short-term internship on international cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean International, and Kai Tak Cruise Terminal as this programme aims to provide a world class education for those considering the cruise industry as a genuine career choice.

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Field Trip
The entire programme consists of 8 modules (20 credits each, except for Honours Project with 40 credits).
The programme will have 405 hours of contact in the form of lectures, tutorials and supervision. Except for the Honours Project, each module will consist of 30 hours of lectures and 15 hours of tutorials. Plymouth University will send their professors out to Hong Kong to teach 15 hours for each of the five modules and will supervise the students for the Honours Project module over two terms. Local lecturers accredited by Plymouth University will be appointed by HKU SPACE to deliver three modules with 30-hour lectures and 15-hour tutorial each.

Assessment
The mode of assessment for each module is different from module to module but will be generally based on a combination of coursework (including assignments and tests/projects). Throughout the programme, students will be assessed by a combination of report writing, case-study assignments, oral presentation, project and tests (open/closed book).
Delivery
All modules will be taught in English. Lecture notes, teaching materials and assessments will be in English as well.
On Campus Transfer
Overseas study opportunities for a full semester will be available for several students to study in Plymouth with all Hong Kong credits being counted toward the qualification. No additional tuition fees will be applied.
Award
The entire programme consists of 8 modules (20 credits each, except for Honours Project with 40 credits). Students who complete all modules (180 credits) will obtain Bachelor of Science (Honours) Cruise Management. Under extenuating circumstances, students who complete modules 1 - 6, 8 will obtain an ordinary degree, Bachelor of Science Cruise Management.
Further Studies
Upon graduation, students will have developed independent thinking skills, critical analysis of current hospitality and tourism management knowledge. Honours degree students will have undertaken a final-year project which includes data collection and analysis, therefore, students will be well-equipped with research skills necessary for further studies. Graduates with second-class honours are eligible to apply for the Master of Science Tourism and Hospitality Management programme, in collaboration with University of Plymouth at HKU SPACE (Full time: 12 months; Part time: 18 months), and they can enjoy 10% alumni discount of tuition fee.

This is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead.
1. Leadership
The module allows student to explore the role of leadership within organizations and workplaces, with an emphasis on the tourism and hospitality industries, including both the practical and theoretical aspects of leadership and how the concept is changing over time. It also provides an introduction to leadership theories and techniques so that students can review the key elements of leadership and its use for different circumstances.
2. English for Academic Purposes
This module focuses on the academic English language content and skills which students need to master in order to study successfully. Students will receive input on academic vocabulary, academic writing skills, giving presentations and developing critical thinking and research skills. Students will be exposed to a range of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, group discussions, pair work, watching videos and listening activities. This module is interactive in nature and students are expected to take an active part in classroom activities. Students will be expected to study outside of class time and show initiativein this area and focus on developing their individual language and academic skills.
3. Cruise Operations and Passenger Services
The module is designed to develop the knowledge and skills acquired in the context of the cruise industry. Operational aspects of cruising combined with passenger services form the main focus. A programme of lectures, seminars and individual projects will help develop student learning in context.
4. Managing Service Innovation
This module explores many aspects that define service strategies for Hospitality and Tourism Management. It has a predominantly student-centred approach to investigating and developing the issues that arise from seminar questions and enables options for individual choice and customised orientation. To evaluate the issues which are important to managing service strategies in the industry. This will entail opportunities to critically examine the theoretical perspectives on service in a variety of settings such as: hotels; licensed retail; conference and events; transport catering; commercial catering; and other sectors.
5. Research Methods (Pre-requisite module for "Honours Project")
This module enables students to apply and justify a range of methods and source material for the purposes of tourism, hospitality and events management research; and to understand and appreciate the potential contributions of disciplines and research approaches that help to explain the nature and development of tourism, hospitality and events management.
6. Hospitality Dynamics
The module establishes a basis from which students can recognise and reflect upon current concepts, trends, and issues related to the hospitality industry and management. In particular, this module aims to analyse specific current issues associated with the hospitality industry; to provide a critical understanding of the dynamics associated with current issues and trends in hospitality management; to construct effective arguments concerning current issues related to the hospitality industry and its management.
7. Honours Project (divided into 2 parts)
The student integrates subject specific knowledge and skills to develop a specialist area of knowledge in depth and conducts their own research investigation and reports their findings with some guided supervision. This module aims to give the student an opportunity to develop a topic relevant to their programme of study in depth. It also enables a student to show their ability to integrate a range of knowledge and skills in tackling their project topic, whilst giving a student the experience of taking control of a major live assignment.
8. Cruise Operations and Continuity Planning
The module considers the complex issues associated with managing change, evaluating risk and ensuring continuity for cruise operations. In order to achieve this, a critical appraisal of contemporary industry issues is undertaken. Thereafter, the module uses individual case study work centred on a cruise operation to enable students to apply their understanding of business continuity planning to a realistic problem.
An Optional overnight cruise line field trip at your own expense will be arranged in this module.
Except for the Honours Project, each module consists of both Block Teaching Week and Tutorial weeks, lasting for approximately 2 months.

For Honour Project, it consists of 30-hour lecture, 12-hour tutorial and many face-to-face and online consultation sessions. Students will be supervised by Plymouth University lecturers over a period of approximately 8 months.
Applicants shall:
1. hold an Advanced Diploma / Higher Diploma in Hospitality Management / Tourism and Hospitality Management awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE;
OR
2. A. (i) hold an Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree / Higher Diploma in Hospitality
Management granted by a recognised institution;
OR
(ii) hold an Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree / Higher Diplomain other related
disciplines such as Business, Marketing, Management, Leisure, and Recreation
Studies granted by a recognized institution;
and
B. Provide evidence of English proficiency such as :
(a) HKCEE English Language at Level 2; OR
(b) HKCEE English Language (Syllabus B) at Grade E (Grade C in the case of English
Language(Syllabus A)); OR
(c) HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 2; ; OR
(d) an overall band of 6.0 or above in the IELTS ; OR
(e) a score of 500 in the paper-based TOEFL or a score of 173 in the computer-based
TOEFL and a score of 4.5 in Test of Written English.
OR
3. have a degree of other disciplines.
Applicants from (2) and (3) may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants from (2Aii) and (3) may be required to take and pass additional modules based on individual merit before the start of the programme.
