The programme aims to meet the educational needs of Lift / Escalator Technicians through academic and practical training. Upon successfully completing the programme, graduates will be equipped with technical knowledge and skills and qualified to become a Registered Lift Worker and / or Registered Escalator Worker under the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), provided that they have at least four years of experience in the industry.

The programme will be offered on a part-time basis with 3 semesters in each academic year. For year 1 modules, there will be 24 contact hours per module and will be taught 3 hours per week (i.e. total 8 weeks). For year 2 modules, there will be 30 contact hours per module and will be taught 3 hours per week (i.e. total 10 weeks). For year 3 modules, there will be 36 contact hours per module and will be taught 3 hours per week (i.e. total 12 weeks). The Final Year Project/Practicum will be held in year 4. There will be 72 contact hours so that students can seek feedback and guidance from their supervisors.

The language modules will be taught by face-to-face lectures with small group discussions, and case studies. For specialism modules, different teaching and learning approaches are adopted, including face-to-face lectures, class discussions, group work, practical, site visit, field work, laboratory work, directed self-study and computer aided learning.


Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, students should be able to

1. identify, analyse, and solve problems of lift engineering practice;

2. identify potential problems, propose technical alternatives, and implement the corresponding solutions for lift;

3. interpret and research specifications and safety codes, and rectify the incompliance;

4. communicate ethically, responsibly, and effectively;

5. discuss the latest circulars and other EMSD publications related to lift regulatory requirements.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Lift Engineering (升降機工程學高等文憑).

#Pre-requisite is required before attempting the module. 

Classes will generally be held on either weekday evenings (7:15 - 10:15pm); or Saturday afternoons (2:30 - 5:30pm); or Saturday evenings (6:30 - 9:30pm); or Sunday mornings (10:00am - 1:00pm), or Sunday afternoons (2:30 - 5:30pm).

Applicants shall be employed in a Registered Lift / Escalator Company as technical workers and should:

  1. have gained in the HKDSE Examination Level 2 or above in 5 subjects# (including Chinese Language and English Language); or
  2. have gained in the HKCEE Grade E in three subjects, and Level 2 in Chinese Language and English Language*, or equivalent; or
  3. hold a Diploma in Yi Jin awarded by a recognized institution.

 #Applicants are allowed to use not more than two Applied Learning (ApL) subjects in the application. The recognition of the ApL subjects is as follows: 

“Attained with distinction” is deemed equivalent to Level 3"; and

“Attained” is deemed equivalent to Level 2."

* With effect from 2007, HKU SPACE recognizes Grade E previously awarded for Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) (Grade C in the case of English Language (Syllabus A)) at HKCEE as an acceptable alternative to Level 2 in these two subjects at HKCEE.

Advanced Diploma in Lift Engineering

  • This course is recognised under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level [4])

The programme is fully recognized by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD). Students who have successfully completed the programme will be recognized by the EMSD, Government of the HKSAR as the academic qualification satisfying the registration requirement for lift worker and escalator worker pursuant to section 1(d) of Part 1 and section 1(d) of Part 3 in Schedule 10 of the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance. Other than the academic qualification, applicants shall have:

  1. at least 4 years of relevant working experience (of which at least one year is obtained within the 5-year period immediately before the date of submission of the application); and
     
  2. has the necessary practical experience and relevant training, to satisfy the registration requirements.

Enrolment Method

Applicants are required to:

  1. apply in person by submitting the Application Form SF26; AND
  2. with original and copy of the above documents to any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

Applicants will be informed for the admission results after assessment. 

Notes

  1. Applicants who have responded to the previous admission need not re-apply.  
  2. HKU SPACE reserves the right to cancel a course in case of insufficient enrolment or unforeseen difficulties arising from running the course.
  3. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.
  4. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.
  5. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  6. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  7. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  8. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’. Such copies will only normally be issued at the end of a course.
