Dietetics, Food & Nutrition

Public awareness of the importance of nutrition and health has increased the demand for quality education in food and nutrition. Since 1995, the Dietetics, Food and Nutrition area has offered quality education in food and nutritional sciences to those with a personal or professional interest in the field.

We provide an extensive articulation network of programmes for students who wish to study part-time, from short courses, certificates, and diplomas to degree (Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Food and Nutrition) and Master levels (MSc/PgD in Human Nutrition / Dietetics).

Our flagship programme, the Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, is the only local programme that trains students to be dietitians. Graduates are qualified for employment as dietitians in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Department of Health and the Hospital Authority. In addition, graduates are eligible to apply for registration as dietitians with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council, UK).

Individuals with different genetic make-up can respond differently towards the same food. Nutrigenomics is the science to understand how nutrients interact with human genes, with the ultimate goal of providing personalised nutrition advice according to one’s own genes.
 
This course aims to equip students with the knowledge of genetics and the cutting-edge technologies applied in nutrigenomics that are useful for interpretation of the test results in relation to personalised nutrition. 

By attending the course, Hong Kong Dietitians Association (HKDA) members will be awarded 10 core points.

The management of food safety is an increasingly high profile and complex issue. The safety of food is paramount to the health and well-being of consumers and the economic viability of industries involved in the food chain. Government officials regulating food safety, and industry representatives operating within legal and quality standards frameworks, require specialized knowledge and skills to help them identify and effectively manage risks. In response to this, the Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK and the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) collaborate to deliver this Outreach Franchise MSc in Food Safety Management.

The programme is offered on a part-time basis (except for the clinical placement) which falls in line with the school’s mission in delivering flexible programmes which meet the needs of potential students and the community.

Holders of the MSc in Dietetics fulfill the criteria for employment as dietitians by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), UK.
