Dr LEE Shiu

Citation delivered by Professor CHAN Wing-wah, Deputy Director (Arts and Sciences)

Dr Lee Shiu, BS, MS, MSc, PhD, is a lifelong supporter of learning and has supported many initiatives to promote student exchange, particularly students from Hong Kong and Mainland China but also from the United States and Canada. He has also supported summer cultural exchange programmes in local universities and endowed the Chung Chi College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He has promoted many initiatives in other disciplines, for example legal studies, medical studies and social sciences and he is firmly of the opinion that it is important to promote English as a language of international academic exchanges. In this context, he has funded many English language training programmes, both in Hong Kong and China.

He and Mrs Lee are well known as philanthropists who gladly serve humanity and give back to the community. He also opened Dragon Garden Villa for the benefit of the public. In terms of involvement in HKU SPACE, Dr Lee Shiu has been a strong supporter of the Community College, having served on its Advisory Council and being a significant supporter in the development of the Kowloon East campus through a generous donation. For all these reasons, it is fitting for the School to honour Dr Lee Shiu.
