Introductory Seminar

This introductory seminar aims to familiarize participants with the concept of bullying, and with audience participation, discuss the difference between Western notions of workplace bullying, and bullying in the Asian, more specifically Hong Kong context. The Speak aims to introduce the Work Health and Safety framework that has been shown to be effective in preventing and managing bullying, and briefly outlines the different interventions that address bullying, including when mediation should be used and when it should not be used in resolving complaints of workplace bullying and incivility.

While the term "workplace bullying" has become synonymous with inappropriate workplace behaviors, the main concepts underlying the operational definition of bullying included repeated negative behaviors, that occur over time, and where there is a power difference between the perpetrator/s and target/s. Bullying is viewed as Work Health and Safety hazard because of the potential injury to targets that are repeatedly exposed to these negative and damaging behaviors. According to a 2012 Federal Government enquiry the cost of workplace bullying to Australian business has been estimated to be to $36 billion dollars in lost productivity and payouts.

There is significant research that has highlighted the importance of the workplace environment as a precursor for workplace bullying and there are specific risks that have been found that contribute to the emergence of bad behaviors and escalation of these behaviors into workplace bullying. Bullying has mostly been studied in European and Western contexts, however there is growing interest and research into workplace bullying in a number of countries in the Asian region. While most of these studies have focused on school bullying, there are a few that have examined bullying in Asian organization and have found both similarities and differences to bullying in Western workplace environments.
