Certificate in German (Introductory) is available in one 120-hour programme or two 60-hour programmes (Part 1 and Part 2). After completion of both Part 1 and Part 2, the level will be equivalent to the HKU SPACE "Certificate in German (Introductory)" programme.

Class arrangement during COVID-19
The COVID-19 situation may still be fluid and constantly affect class arrangements in the coming months. The health and safety of our students will always be our top priority. To ensure that students’ academic progress is not affected, the School may substitute face-to-face classes with online teaching if necessary in the event that face-to-face classes cannot be held. Our respective Programme Teams will contact the students concerned with details of such arrangements as necessary.

The programme is aimed at students with no previous or little knowledge of the language. It covers a range of everyday topics and situations and includes a balance of all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), as well as practice on key grammar points, vocabulary and pronunciation relevant to the level. By the end of the programme, students should be able to understand and use basic everyday phrases to introduce themselves, ask and answer questions about personal details. They will also learn language to deal with everyday situations like shopping, eating out, talking about their jobs, families and interests.

Detailed information can be found in EU016A Certificate in German (Introductory) (Part 1 and Part 2).

  • The Certificate in German (Introductory) (Part 1) course gives students a chance to see if they like German before committing themselves to further study.
  • The Certificate in German (Introductory) (Part 2) course follows on from the Certificate in German (Introductory) (Part 1) course. Students who pass this course receive the HKUSPACE Certificate in German (Introductory).

  • Students who complete a Certificate in German (Introductory) (Part 2) course can join a 120-hour Certificate in German (Intermediate) course.
  • Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Unless any change is made to the advertised details, we will not issue joining instructions. If your application has been accepted, you should go to the first session of the class at the time and place shown. All the necessary teaching materials will be sent to you at the first session.
  • No refunds or transfers to a different class will be approved.
  • Swapping between parallel groups (if any) is not allowed under any circumstances.
