This programme aims to equip students with knowledge and understanding of contemporary sustainable and responsible business issues, strategies, and practices in the hospitality services organizations. This programme will deliver an applied yet holistic view of sustainable management for hospitality services organizations. It is designed in such a way that it will train students to be innovative and be able to integrate global awareness towards sustainability issues into their business planning, operations, and decision-making. It will enable them to seek competitive and sustainable advantages for their organizations, and create value to their target customers with sound sustainable management practices.
Pioneering executives understand that sustainability is now the key driver of innovation in a resource-constrained world. Some hospitality services organizations have already gained a substantial competitive advantage by executing sustainability in their business management practices, successfully providing a brand new experience in the customer journey and enjoying a rewarding growth.
Sustainability has become one of the major policy concerns in the world and the growing social and global challenges are putting a lot of pressure on private sectors. Hong Kong government is also identifying strategic directions and driving sustainability.
Hence, it is vital for Sustainability leaders to be innovative in promoting and embedding sustainability into the entire business operation encompassing strategy, operation, marketing, finance and organizational behavior.

This programme aims to offer students with the sustainability thinking and wisdom required for the proper management of sustainability initiatives geared towards economic prosperity and business success. Students will gain the ability to craft competitive and innovative strategies (via designated tools) for resolving sustainbility challenges as part of their long-term business planning within a multi-cultural hospitality environment. Students will also master the road map for successful sustainable management so as to elevate customer relationships through value-creation.

- The lecture of each module (except for the module “Final Project”) will last for 18 hours in 4 consecutive days in a month. Students will study one module in each month in the first 10 months, and the last module “Final Project” in the last two months (a total of 12 months for completion).
Sustainable Destination Development
Tourism has had a profound and irreversible effect on many destination areas. If tourism continues to grow and diversify in the next decade at an escalating rate, extensive impacts will expand to more destinations. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness about sustainability issues among tourism industry professionals as well as policy makers. This is a very challenging task as each destination might have its own unique landscape and framework while developing tourism activities. By investigating international case studies and best practices, this module serves to provide implications for destination and site managers to rebuild current unsustainable operations towards more long term sustainable practices.
Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism Management
This module will discuss the principles of sustainable management and its applications in the tourism and hospitality industry;in particular, sustainability concepts including financing sustainable management, corporate social responsibility, environmental management as well as the laws that regulate them will be covered. The content of this module is designed to include a wide range of best practices of sustainable management from different countries in various dimensions.
Socio-cultural Context of Sustainability
This module will explore socio-cultural context of sustainability from the perspective of both corporations and destinations. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and promotion of social equity at tourism destinations will be discussed. By investigating China and other global case studies, this module serves to provide good practices for tourism and hospitality managers and destination managers so as to develop socially sustainable policies and business practices.
This module discusses the emerging concept of responsible innovation, its meaning and its significance, by addressing the societal and ethical implications of different types of innovations and showing how hospitality companies might incorporate this concept into the design of innovative products/services.
Emerging Mega Trends in Hospitality Services
With the demand in new technology, digital marketing, changing consumer behaviour and emerging new markets, this module is designed to discuss a wide range of emerging mega trends in the business environment, so that tourism and hospitality services organizations are able to seize these new business opportunities and overcome the challenges involved in this new era.
Value-added Supply Chain Management
This module aims to introduce the concept of sustainable supply chain management and its framework, so that tourism and hospitality services organizations can integrate sustainability into the entire value chain to create values for each stakeholder. Eco-innovation implementation process and the concept of life-cycle management will be explained to students, along with good practices drawn from service organizations worldwide.
Digital Transformation in Hospitality and Tourism
This module explores the transformation of technology and the Internet and their impacts on hospitality and tourism industry in the 21st century. Taking from the perspective of hospitality and tourism companies, this module offers a practical guide for students to harness the power of technology and reach of the Internet to increase revenues and profitability. It also explains the tactics on ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness by leveraging technology in overall management, distribution channel, operation and marketing. Good practices from different countries will also be shared in different sectors of the hospitality and tourism industry.
Yield Maximization and Capacity Management
This module develops students’ understanding of revenue and capacity management in hospitality services companies to fully realize the revenue potential. It aims to introduce students how revenue and capacity management is executed and the impact it has on business performance. It also provides practical skills and techniques to make smart, strategic decisions about forecasting revenue, managing occupancy/capacity/inventory, pricing, marketing, as well as overbooking strategies. Market and rate strategies are analyzed through case studies in hospitality services companies.
This module considers the influence of culture on several aspects of multi-cultural organizations, including work motivation, leadership style, marketing, negotiation, conflict resolution, communication pattern, and so on. It also covers the issues of cross-cultural relationships prevailing in the hospitality and tourism industry by exploring cultural value orientation, non-verbal communication and cultural customs, so as to equip students with knowledge and skills to cope with the challenging task of meeting the service needs of people from a range of cultures. This will contribute further to the socio-cultural sustainability of the tourism and hospitality industry.
Social Media Tourism
This module explains how social media enables people, rather than organizations, to control and use various media with ease at little or no cost, and how it enables communication and collaboration on a massive scale. In response to the social media age, this module aims to introduce students with effective social media marketing strategies and tactics, and performance measurement so as to best suit changing consumer relationships and behaviour.
This module is a Final Project, which students have to make use of the knowledge and skills learned from the previous modules to complete a group project. Students will be required to propose, design, research, implement, document and present a project that demonstrates the level of knowledge gained over the course of their studies.
Applicants shall have:
a. (i) Hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognized institution; OR
(ii)Hold a professional qualification in a relevant discipline and 3 years of full-time work experience at managerial level in related industries;
b. provide evidence of English proficiency (If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English) such as:
- an overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or
- a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or
- HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3 or above; or
- HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or
- equivalent qualifications.
Applicants with other qualifications and relevant experiences will be considered on individual merit.

- Duly completed HKU SPACE application form (SF26);
- A copy of HKID Card#;
- Certified true copies of full educational certificates and transcripts;
- Testimonials or other documentary proof of the applicant’s work experience;
- A crossed cheque or bank draft of HK$150 made payable to "HKU SPACE" as application fee (non-refundable)
1. Cash or EPS
Cash or EPS are accepted at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.
2. Cheque or bank draft
Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please write the programme title(s) and the applicant’s name on the back of the cheque. You may either:
- in person by submitting the payment, completed form(s), and required supporting documents to any of our enrolment centres; or
- by mailing the above documents to any of our enrolment centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope.
Course applicants, who are holders of HKU SPACE Mastercard, can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses of HK$2,000 and over. For enquiries, please contact our enrolment centres.
4. Online payment
Online payment for short courses (first come, first served) and selected award-bearing programmes is available using PPS, VISA or Mastercard. Please refer to the Online Services page on the School website.
- For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or Mastercard if the course is to start shortly.
- Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or online PPS will be reimbursed by a cheque; fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to credit card account used for payment.
- In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme teams for details.
- Fees and places on courses are not transferrable. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
- HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
- For additional copies of receipts, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’ to any of our enrolment centres. Such copies will normally be issued at the end of a course.
