This Cultural Heritage Management Programme (CHM), established since 2005, is an unique programme in Hong Kong which takes holistic approach to study the sustainable management of both tangible and intangible heritage resources in a systemic manner through lectures, discussion, workshops, class exercise and local & overseas field studies.

The curriculumof this programme takes a broad view of cultural heritage management and addresses specific issues and problems in Asia. Through a series of Postgraduate Certificate programmes as intermediate awards, the programme systematically explores current and emerging issues related to understanding and managing Asia's cultural heritage resources. It welcomes practising professionals as well as recent graduates with relevant work experience from such fields as architecture and landscape architecture, building and estate management, building services engineering, civil and structural engineering, surveying, and urban design and planning. In addition, it welcomes professionals from the fields of anthropology, archaeology, art and architectural history, cultural heritage management, geography, history, journalism and museum studies.

Local and overseas field study trips arranged within the curriculum were highly appreciated by students and alumni as one of the most value-added activities of the programme. These field studies are excellent opportunities for students to meet with local and overseas experts in the field, to apply skills and knowledge learnt, as well as critically evaluate various conservation management approach in the Asia context and prospective.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims at:

  • In-depth understanding of cultural heritage resources in Asia;
  • Acquiring Knowledge of principles and practice of protecting, interpreting and managing of cultural heritage resources in Asia;
  • Performing Valued-based Management of cultural heritage through protection and enhancement for the benefit of wider people in a sustainable manner;
  • Adoption of a holistic approach to cultural heritage management, especially by understanding the roles of different disciplines related to cultural heritage management and the need for a participative approach in conservation projects; and
  • Constructing opportunity for continued professional development and, more specifically, helping to equip professionals with appropriate knowledge for better management of cultural heritage resources in Asia

HKU SPACE reserves the right to cancel a module if there is insufficient enrolment or unforeseen difficulties arising from mounting the course.

Students who have completed the programme at Postgraduate Certificate level but continue to pursue the one-year part-time Postgraduate Diploma (Total contact hours: 200) shall not be awarded any intermediate award.The requirement for obtaining Postgraduate Diploma award is as follows:

  1. Complete Module -1(Understanding Cultural Heritage Resources in Asia)
  2. Complete Module -3(Cultural Tourism and Sustainable Development)
  3. Complete Module -4(Compulsory for Diploma)
  4. Complete any one of the other optional modules: Module -2  / Module -5 / Module -6, which must be different from the ones already completed

Professional Recognition

Participation in this programme will satisfy HKIA-CPD requirement.

The programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists 香港建築文物保護師學會 (HKICON). Such recognition will allow graduates of the programme to qualify for associate membership status in the Institute. Graduates of the programme may be requested to sit for an interview with the Institute or fulfill other additional requirements before such membership is granted.

Venue

Applicants shall hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognized institution.

If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants shall provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:

 i.   an overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or

ii.   a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or

iii.   HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or

iv.   HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3 or above; or

v.   equivalent qualifications.

1. CASH OR EPS

Course fees can be paid by cash or EPS at any HKU SPACE enrolment counters.

2. CHEQUE OR BANK DRAFT

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify theprogramme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of acheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/MASTERCARD

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at anyHKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-freeinstalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

Notes

  1. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.

  2. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  3. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  4. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  5. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’. Such copies will only normally be issued at the end of a course.
